Camp Claddagh Exhibition - Kenny Gallery, Galway

Hi All

Congratulations again on the phenomenal exhibition held in Kennys Gallery - Images for life.
35 images were sold and a total of €3140 has so far been raised for the charity.

There was a fantastic turn-out on the night and incuded a piece on TG4 news - here's a link @ 6mins 20secs.

A special thanks to Martin Davitt & Alan O'Connor (White Room) for all the framing at short notice.

We have arranged for all remaining images to be collected from Kennys and contacted the photographers.
Please note: All the framing costs have been met by the club as its contribution to the charity.

World Wide Photowalk

The 3rd Annual World Wide Photowalk takes place on the 24th July. As leader of last years walk, I was invited to lead the walk again this year. This year the walk begins at Spanish Arch and will cover Galway Waterways. All are invited, and I'd like to extend this welcome to members of the camera club. A big thank-you to everyone for the great work in getting the exhibition together.

It was an extremely successful show with over 25 prints sold already for the charity - Camp Claddagh Chernobyl Project.

There was some brilliant publicity, with a full page spread in the Tribune and a slot on TG4 news.

We expect a further up-surge in the membership next year after seeing the great work on display.

This is a further 200 mtrs up Wellpark Road past the GMIT on the left.
Enter the lower business park and come back down the hill past the Bank of Ireland.
Nortel is situated at the bottom of the estate with plenty of parking space.

Please use the entrance marked Security 1 and not Reception - the meeting room will be signposted.

Calling all photographers

Mac Ruairi Art Publishers are holding a fantastic photo competition for professionals and amateurs alike. The streets of Galway city will be plunged back inti the 1950's as a scene from "Egg Shells and Broken dreams" lifts right off the page and into Shop Street as a young, bare-footed boy is sent on a jurney with disatrous consequences.
€250 will be offered to the photograph that is deemed to best capture the scene.
All you need to do to be in with a chance to win is turn up in front of Dubrays Bookshop in Shop Street at 5:30 pm Thursday 22nd with your camera and get snapping.

Weekend Away - Dungarven - June 4th to 7th

The location for annual weekend trip away has now been switched:

Ever increasing hotel/chalet costs in Dingle has meant that an alternative location has been decided upon and the consensus is using Dungarven as a base.

There are lots of attractive photographic sights within easy reach - Comeragh & KnockmealdownMts; Hook Head, Waterford, Foto Wildlife Park; beaches at Tramore & Stradbally and more. (I'm sounding like the Waterford tourist guidebook here !)

The dates are departing Fri 4th June returning Mon 7th June.

Further details on accomodation and itinerary will be announced during the coming weeks at the club meeting and if you need any further info then please get in touch with John McHugh.

Camp Claddagh Exhibition - Kenny Gallery, Galway

The charity exhibition for the Camp Claddagh fund is now scheduled for Saturday 15th May at the Kenny gallery in Liosbaun Estate.
This is a prestige gallery and will definitely enhance the reputation of the club this year.

Ideally the entries will need to be framed at approx 20" x 16" as a standard size to show them to their full potential.
The space can hold more than 50 images so we would like as many entries as possible from all members.

We are in the process of negotiating a deal with the White Room gallery for a deal on the framing and will update at the next meeting.

The new season recommences on January 14th at 8pm and everyone is welcome back. It's the Spring & Summer programme but with us all still in the grip of midwinter it seems a long way off for spring & summer !

Attached is the programme which is virtually complete but there are still some spaces to be filled which will be announced as the season continues. You can download a copy here.

Our first guest is Maurice Gunning on Jan 21st - Maurice is photographer in residence at the Irish World Academy of Music & Dance, University of Limerick. He will be showing a selection of his portfolio.
Next up will be Mark Sedgewick in February - Mark is the current chairperson of the IPF and will be presenting his own work as well as the work of the IPF (this is the postponed presentation from last year).
Also scheduled is Peter Cox - Peter was the Irish landscape photographer of the year 2007 and will be presenting work from his portfolio.

Other highlights include:

Michael Kelly Memorial Team AV competition in May. We will be arranging the teams & theme in the coming weeks to allow everyone a chance to put together their shows.
Camp Claddagh club exhibition - we are looking to finalise the details on this charity event to exhibit and sell work in a Galway gallery for the Camp Claddagh Chernobyl charity.
Lomographic night - a night devoted to all things lo-fi. Images taken on Holgas, Dianes, pinholes and other toy cameras.
Field trips - we will be looking to organise outings through the season so keep a look out for these.
Finally the competitions for this season are: Open; Decisive Moment (after HC Bresson); Galway Waterways; Landscape. Remember that prizes are available for these competitions courtesy of Davitt Photo Centre in Salthill for your processing and framing needs.
Our final night in May will incorporate the Photographer of the Year; Nortel Panel award and Landscape Photo of the Year.

We look forward to seeing you all in the White Room on Thursday nights and Happy New Year to all.

Joe Cornish speaks about the work of Peter Dombrovskis

Joe Cornish is a quite a famous English landscape photographer. In the video in this post he talks about the work of the late Peter Dombrovskis, a Tasmanian landscape photographer. He takes us through one of Peter's books, and discusses the images therein. For those in the club that enjoy both looking and shooting Landscapes, this video is a must view. Peter shot is all weathers, and seeing this could well be the encouragement needed for those dreary days.

Competition Rules Updated

Hi All

This is just a gentle reminder on competition rules.
There are 5 categories:

Colour digital
B&W digital
Colour Print
B&W Print
Slide

There is a maximum of 4 entries per person and a maximum of only 2 in any one category e.g. you can enter 2 colour digital, 1 B&W print and 1 colour print.

Prints must be mounted and not exceed 20" x 16" (50cm x 40cm) including the mount. They should have your name on the back and the orientation i.e which way up !

Digital entries should be no more than 1000 pixels on the longest length and should be submitted under the following filename format: username_competitionname_imageno.format (e.g.adrianmegahey_emotions_img1.jpg)

Slides should be dotted in the bottom left corner as you view normally.

Although new material is preferred, any photo which has not been entered into competion in the previous 10 years may be entered again. However, no previously winning image may be submitted again in any category.

The theme of the CRANN Open Photographic Competition is

Irish Trees & Hedgerows

This is open to all amateur photographers in the country.

There are cash prizes of €50 to €250 for the top three images.
Entry is free, however, only colour prints up to A4, mounted on card, will be accepted.
The closing date for the competition is Friday 30th October.

IRISH METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY

The IMS competition is fairly open ended - it can be of any Irish location but must have a seasonal or weather theme.

Adrian Megahey has already shown the Black & White conversion presentation, so next week's workshop will be on RAW conversion, editing priciples, & resizing for output.

Sean McCormack will now be presenting on October 8th.

The new season starts on Thursday September 10th at 8pm.

Attached is the winter programme for 2009, which is virtually complete. Highlights include a presentation by Mark Sedgwick, President of the IPF in November, a Photoblogs presentation from John Smyth and a presentation of the London Salon show. We are also looking to get some further guests for both the winter and spring seasons - we will keep you posted.

Volvo Ocean Race / Pix.ie Photo competition Exhibition

The Pix.ie/Let's Do It Galway/Volvo Ocean Race are having an exhibition of 100 or so images from the 17,000 entries uploaded during the stopover. The exhibition is taking place at Merchant's Hall, Merchant's Road from Friday 21st - Sun 23rd.

Go along and have a look as there are people from the club on display.

The 2009 Galway Camera Club season will commence at 8pm on Thurs 10th September in the White Room, Cluain Mhuire, Wellpark Road. The first meeting will be a Cheese & Wine reception and a chance to get to meet club members. All are welcome to attend.

World Wide Photo Walk

The second annual world wide photo walk takes place on the 18th July this year.
I applied and was accepted as walk leader for the Galway walk. There are requirements to lead the walk, such as having lead a camera group or teaching classes. As I've done both, and seeing no one else had applied, I applied.

Anyway, the walk is limited to 50 people, so if you are interested, go to the page on the world wide photo walk page and sign up.

What is a Photo Walk? Well pretty much as it sounds, you takes photos and walk. There are prizes for the best photo of the walk, and photos get featured on the website. The idea of a world wide photo walk is the brain child of Photoshop author Scott Kelby. It's all about meeting other photographers and having fun in the process.

There is another photo competition taking pace during the Volvo race stopover.

This one is being run by Fahfoto.
They are looking for images that best capture the spirit and atmosphere in Galway during the stopover period .

1st prize: Nikon D60 DSLR with 18-55 VR lens, 1gb memory card & holdall bag - worth €599.00

Top five images will be enlarged and displayed in their window in Shop Street.

Closing date for entries is 5:30pm Saturday 13th June and details and entry forms can be found here

AGM

The AGM was held on 7th May

Adrian Megahey was voted in as the new chairperson for the 2009 / 2010 season.

A committee meeting will be held on 28th May at the Menlo Park Hotel at 8pm.
Details on all the committee positions will be finalised at this meeting.

Reminders will be sent to all committee members.

May I take this opportunity on behalf of the club to thank John McHugh for all his sterling work as chairperson last year and thank him in advance for all his advice for the coming season !!!

Volvo Ocean Race Photo Competition

The Volvo Ocean Race is coming to Ireland this weekend and to celebrate, Galway is hosting a 15-day festival of sailing, music, culture and craic and all for free! Highlights include free concerts, street performance, an attempt to break the world record for Céilí dancing, a Red Arrows air display, markets, interactive exhibits including a simulator and the opportunity to be winched to the top of the mast of a Volvo Open 70 racing boat.

To mark this event, Pixie has been asked by Volvo Ocean Race to help in hosting a photo competition in conjunction with sponsors www.lookwest.ie. All you need to do is register (if you haven't already done it) and upload your images to the following group for all to see and the chance of winning some top quality prices.

To get a chance of a media pass or special access please spread the word or leave a message here showing your interest.

Timetable at time of writing is as follows:

May 23/24/25 – Boats arrive (exact date and time will be known closer to the time).
May 30 – In harbour racing day (Pixie we have 2 passes for the media boat on this day too?)
June 6 – The boat depart!

Search & Rescue Demo

This will involve the Lifeboat and the S61N Helicopter from Shannon.

Shoot – Photojournalism: The History of the Gun and the Camera

Meetforeal events are designed for you to meet like-minded people, share your ideas and learn something new!

This fantastic interactive discussion and presentation will be led by Dave Gilligan, photographer and design expert based in Limerick.

Dave’s presentation will look at some key photographs taken during the wars of the 20th century and some other violent events, including the history of the IRA and the decommissioning of their weapons. It will include a discussion of the cameras used by the photographers of the time and the most violent events that they witnessed.

After the presentation, there will be an interactive discussion, and space for other photographers to give a short presentation of their work.

Team Audio Visual Presentation

Teams:

Teams must comprise of 3 Members (An effort should be made as far as possible for teams to include new club members)

Digital AV Presentation:

Each team must produce a 6-8 minute slideshow/presentation of photographs with an accompanying soundtrack and/or commentary.

There is no limit on the number of photographs per presentation.

The soundtrack may be music or spoken word or a combination of both.

The photographs and soundtrack should complement each other and reflect upon the theme of the presentation.

The choice of theme is the decision of each individual team.

Judging

Presentations will be adjudicated along the following guidelines (not an exhaustive list):

A post over on the Flickr Adobe Lightroom blog lead to me taking the FM 100 Hue Test. Being on the X-rite website, you know that it's an accurate test. Zero is the perfect score. I got a 4, so I guess I'm happy. My weakness was in the cyan/blue section. It's a bit of fun, even if it does serve to show that maybe you can't see as well as you might imagine!

Podge Kelly | AGM

Hi Folks,
Podge Kelly will be with us this Wednesday. He'll be showing a series of slideshows and prints, along with a demonstration of Nik Filters.
He's suggested that if people bring along images on disk/USB drive, he'd have a go at using Nik on them as part of the demo.

This is the last full meeting before the AGM, which I'm quite looking forward to.

The AGM is the following week and the night includes Prize giving and 2 competitions.

Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place as Photographer of the year will be awarded, based on points from the competitions throughout the year.

For new members there is the Nortel Trophy. 6 images are required for this panel. Ann Sweeney has more details on this panel and I suspect we'll be announcing these at this weeks meeting.

The other prize on the night is the Trophy for the annual Landscape Print competition. Each member can enter 2 images for this Trophy. Last years total number of entries was not great, and with the wealth of talent in the club, I think there should be much more. Photos can be B&W or colour. They must be mounted. There is no maximum or minimum size and the entries will be judged on the night

Finally, the AGM will give people a chance to have their say in the running of the club. If you feel you have something to say or want to join the committee, let us know. If we have a list of potential committee members, the process of nominating and seconding will go much faster. If you have gotten benefit from the club, I think it's your duty as a member to give something back.

A reminder that the IPF Photography 2008 annual is available at the meetings. We've still a few copies left @€15 each, normal price €20.
The annual is a collection of photographs from IPF members. Recently it's been a bit light on entries from members of Galway Camera Club. I'd encourage members to enter photos before the 1st June deadline this year, in order to make the cut for next years edition.

Galway Camera Club 2008 Team Competition

This is a photographic competition for teams of 3 to produce a cohesive panel of 10 mounted photographs on a Theme of their choice.

The photographs should work together as a panel and complement the theme, tell a story etc.

The panels will be presented on the 23rd April 2008 at a special Team Competition Night.

First prize for each member of the winning team will be a photograph of their choice mounted and framed. (Standard sizes up to 16x20)

The competition prize is being generously sponsored by Raymond Lyons, The Framemaker, 10 Cross Street, Galway 091-563219

Normal competition rules apply. This is a competition for mounted prints only. No digital or slide panels.

Just to let you know, Digital Beginners (a training company based in Dublin) have teamed up with Spectra to run a Street Photography Competition.

The rules are fairly specific (ie has to be taken outside a Spectra store, etc), so check out www.digitalbeginners/streetcompetition.htm.

We had 6 people show up for the Christmas Lights meetup. The ladies were decidedly letting their side down as it was an all male contingent. I'd expect to see a few of these images showing up on the Flickr Group in the next few days. Hopefully we'll organise more of these in the future, even before we resume again in Jan.

We're meeting at 3.30pm on Sun at the Kings Head to go shooting the Christmas lights as evening falls. Probably the best lights are at city hall, so we may make out way there shortly after 3.30. Be early rather than late.
If you have no experience of balancing artificial and natural light, more experienced members will be more than willing to help.

Epson Youth Photography Awards 2007
CALLING ALL SCHOOLS & COLLEGES

The Irish Photographic Federation, in conjunction with Epson, are running a Youth photography competition.

Entries must consist of a portfolio of 10 images from each participating school or college. Prizes will be awarded to the school or college with the best portfolio. There will also be individual awards.

Photographs may be in Black & White or colour. There are two sections in the competition.

Section 1 - For photographers under 16 years of age.

Section 2 - For photographers under 21 years of age.

IPF Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals will be awarded in each section.

All second and third level schools and colleges in the Republic of Ireland are eligible to enter. Presentation of awards will take place on 10 December 2007 in Dublin.

The category includes images where flora, or fauna, are the central focus off the photo. We're not being as strict as the IPF rulings here, so you can include manmade items if you wish, eg a bird on a fence post is okay.

Galway Camera Club start Beginners Classes

With the season in full swing, Galway Camera Club would like to announce the commencement of Beginners Classes. The first night will be next Wed 10th at 7pm. The classes take place in The White Room, Cluain Mhuire GMIT campus on Wellpark Road. The classes will be run by Ann Sweeney and cover both technical and creative aspects of photography. In addition to this, the class will also have digital photography lessons throughout the year.

It was great to have Art O'Briain in tonight, showing us his work with Fergus Bourke. Fergus is quite an inspirational photographer, and I have to say I really liked that his rye sense of humour came through in the film. RTE have a great intro to the film here.

and stalwart member of the Club. Our deepest sympathy goes to his wife, Frances, and to their family.

Our meeting on Wednesday, October 3, will be devoted to a celebration of Michael’s long and valuable contribution to the Club.
Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Kilcoyne, P.P. Cong, with a homily by Donal Taheny. Danny Griffin will pay tribute to Michael’s
contribution to photography and to the Club. This will be followed by a showing of a selection of Michael’s photographic work.

Athenry Historic Walled Town Photographic Competition

Participants are invited to summit photo(s), which they think best meets the theme of the above named competition:

“‘Stone Mad’; A Photographic Competition to capture what the historic Town Walls mean to you”

The objective of the competition is to select a photograph, which best captures this impression in our Walled Town.

Michael Kelly funeral

The funeral mass of Michael A Kelly will take place tomorrow, Friday 24th, at noon in Cong Church, located beside the Abbey. Michael passed away last Tuesday morning at 5am, after a short illness. Michael's talent and passion for photography, especially in AV slideshows, will be sorely missed by the Club. His guidance, advice and judgement have been a boon to the club from the beginning. Galway Camera Club and its members express their deepest sympathy and condolences to the family in their time of grief.

The 25th Irish National & International Audio-Visual Championships, AV 2007, will take place on 12th to 14th October 2007 in the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks, Dublin.

The event will be judged by Colin Balls, FRPS, FIPF.

Closing date for entries: 1st September, 2007.

Beginners Classes

Beginners Classes for members (i.e. you must be a paid member to attend) will begin on the 3rd October. The classes will generally be run by Ann Sweeney, along with other members contributing in digital workflow lessons. These classes are 1 hour long from 7pm-8pm. They are held in the same room that the club meets in, The White Room, Cluain Mhuire on Wellpark Road.

Competition Rules

Here are the normally accepted rules for entering club competition.

There are 4 categories in our competitions: Digital, Colour Print, Monochrome Print and Slide.

You can have up to 4 entries in total, with no more than 3 in any one category, EG 2 slides, 1 colour print and 1 digital.

Digital entries should be saved with 1000 pixels on the longest dimension. Also the filename should include your name, the competition name and a number if you've more than one digital entry, e.g. SeanMcCormack_Landscape_img2.jpg. Entries must be brought in on the entry night, due to issues with missing images. (Our new competition Secretary may take emails entries)

Prints, both colour and mono, should have your name and the orientation on it. Otherwise the judge may not know which way is up!

All prints should be suitably mounted. Prints not mounted will be disqualified from entry.

While there is currently no size limit, small prints tend to do badly in competition. A print size of 8"X12" to 11"X14" is a good size for competition. External competitions have a maximum size of 16"X20" including the mount, if you are considering entering these also.

Slides should be dotted in the bottom left hand corner as you look at them normally.

Although new material is preferred, any photo which has not been entered competition in 10 years may be entered again.

Galway Camera Club has been running for over 20 years and is a diverse group of individuals interested in taking and viewing photographs. With a broad range of members from Professional to Amateur, we cater to all kinds of photography, from Digital to Film. We have members with interests in Infrared, Pinhole and Lomographic photography, along with more standard fare such as Landscape and Portrait photography.

There are also beginners classes available and new members are always welcome.

We meet on a Thursday night at 8pm in the White Room in Cluain Mhuire college (GMIT), Wellpark Road, situated a short walk from the roundabout at the Huntsman.

2009 Update: The club has finished the 2009 season and will start again in September 2009.
